New NYC mole mystery as 3 people spotted hiding in manhole
The mole men are back.
Police responded to a report that three men were climbing into a Manhattan manhole early Sunday morning in the latest sighting of mysterious intruders on the Big Apple subway, police said.
Police were dispatched to West 141st Street, between Hamilton Place and Amsterdam Avenue, shortly before 1 a.m. following a 911 call reporting the trio had been seen climbing into the sewers, officers said.
Eyewitnesses said at least one of the men was later seen getting out and jumping into a silver-colored vehicle and taking off toward unknown areas, with the incident remaining under investigation, a New York police official said.
Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. and described the report as “unfounded.”
However, the report comes on the heels of numerous eyewitness accounts — and chilling surveillance video footage — showing unidentified intruders entering and exiting the city’s sewer system in recent months.
On Friday, five of the mole men emerged from an Upper East Side manhole on 82nd Street and took off in a truck, according to police and sources.
Last month, two men, Kevin Rodriguez and Samuel Reveron, were arrested after wandering into the subway beneath an Upper East Side hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was staying while he was in town for the United Nations General Assembly.
This summer, another trio of mole men wearing jumpsuits and headlamps crawled out of the ground a block from Madison Square Garden, at 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue in Manhattan.
Another sighting occurred in September of last year, when three people were seen climbing out of a Brooklyn manhole, at Bay Ridge Parkway and 17th Avenue in Bensonhurst, around 4:30 a.m., and all took off before police could respond to a 911 call.
City officials believe the underground intruders may be looking for valuables like coins, wallets, scrap metal or jewelry that were lost and ended up in the sewers.
