The fight for young men comes to Michigan

New twist in Michigan Senate race and deadly plane crash in Florida: Morning Rundown

Young men contributed to the re-election of Donald Trump. Now, their dissatisfaction with the president could be a critical factor in close midterm elections like Michigan’s Senate election.

The voting bloc saw a huge shift toward the GOP in 2024, but an NBC News Decision Desk poll last month found that just 28% of men ages 18 to 29 approve of the president. Republicans and Democrats who spoke to NBC News said three developments were largely to blame: affordability issues, particularly housing costs; the war in Iran; and the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein files.

Mike Rogers and Abdul El-Sayed are both trying to conquer the key group.

El-Sayed not only campaigned fiercely against the war, but even adopted some of Trump’s “America First” language. And Rogers made housing affordability a key part of his pitch. Even football is on the table, with each candidate using sports to try to reach young voters.

Here’s what you need to know about their efforts.

Also shaking up the Senate race, Rep. Haley Stevens – El-Sayed’s former primary opponent – Rogers approved yesterday to knock out the Democrats. This came after El-Sayed’s campaign asked him to stop attending its events amid a dispute over an outdoor ad that Stevens called anti-Semitic. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the move was “a despicable betrayal by Rep. Stevens.”

Plane crash on Florida highway kills all 9 on board

New twist in Michigan Senate race and deadly plane crash in Florida: Morning Rundown

All nine people aboard a Learjet 60 plane died yesterday in a “cataclysmic” crash in Florida, officials said.

The flight, which left Texas and was headed to the Bahamas, crashed near Cresthaven, a residential area in Palm Beach County, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Video captured by a car’s dashboard camera showed the moment the plane plunged into a roadway at high speed, causing a fiery explosion. Another video of the aftermath showed a crater in the middle of a road engulfed in flames.

Over a distressing sound from air traffic control, a woman says, “Mayday, mayday. We’re going down at 10,000 feet per minute,” before shouting frantically, “We’re going to crash.”

Numerous scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue in Florida through today, according to the National Weather Service.

Heart-related adverse events were much more common for energy drinks and stimulant supplements than for other FDA-regulated products, new research shows.Leonora Oates / Getty

Energy drinks and supplements high in stimulants may put young adults at increased risk of heart problems, including cardiac arrest, according to a new study presented at the American Heart Association annual meeting.

The research looked at more than 28,000 reports sent to a Food and Drug Administration database over eight years.

It was found that cardiac arrest was reported about 11 times more often with energy drinks and supplements containing caffeine and stimulants – such as pre-workout powders or caffeine pills – than with other FDA-regulated products.

Adults aged 18 to 34, generally at low risk of heart problems, made up almost half of the reports. The model applied to both men and women.

Staff Picks: 11 data centers and 264 diesel generators surround this school. Is it safe?

New twist in Michigan Senate race and deadly plane crash in Florida: Morning Rundown

Loudoun County, Virginia, nicknamed “data center alley,” is at the heart of the rapid development of AI infrastructure in the United States. There we found a primary school surrounded by 11 data centerswith two more on the way.

Data centers require a huge amount of electricity. To continue operating in the event of a power outage or emergency, they rely on highly polluting backup diesel generators. We dug through state records and discovered that the Department of Environmental Quality had issued permits authorizing the operation of 264 generators at facilities within a half-mile of the school. According to one expert, just one of these typical generators emits as much pollution as 100 18-wheel trucks.

Neighbors and relatives told us they were concerned about the smoke and fumes. Primary school parent Coco Lyons told us: “My daughter left school asking me, ‘Is the building on fire?’ »
