Google has confirmed that at least some Chromebook models will be able to upgrade to its new Googlebook operating systemthe successor to ChromeOS.
“Many of our newer Chromebook devices will be able to upgrade to the Googlebook operating system. Details on migration paths and device eligibility will be shared soon,” the company wrote in a statement. support page which was quietly released last week.
Google hasn’t specified which models will be supported, but the specifications provided for the first batch of Google Books give a clue: they’re all available. functionality at least 16 GB of RAM and a touch screen.
The support page is aimed at IT administrators, and mainly reiterates which Google has already announced, including regular updates and security patches for ChromeOS until mid-2034. Some Chromebook models will receive 10 years of updates from their release date.
If you just purchased a Chromebook, the support page also states: “For eligible devices purchased today with a 10-year support lifecycle extending beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths.”

Although Google Books is currently aimed at consumers, the company plans to support Googlebook OS for schools and businesses with the “first wave of core management capabilities” in the “second half of 2027.” Chromebooks are popular as an inexpensive alternative to Windows laptops and MacBooks, especially in schools.
