NFL examines referee’s interaction with Arizona Cardinals player during game
The NFL said Sunday it is looking into an interaction between an official and Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride.
In the Cardinals’ loss to the New York Giants, McBride was leaving the field in the fourth quarter when a sideline camera showed linesman Jeff Seeman appearing to use profanity toward McBride.
An NFL spokesperson told NBC News the league is looking into the matter.
“This kind of behavior by an official toward a player is unacceptable,” JC Tretter, executive director of the NFL Players Association, wrote on X. “Players are routinely held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standards.”
Seeman has been an NFL official since 2002.
An NFL spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on whether the league has specific rules governing officials’ conduct toward players. According to league rules, it is considered unsportsmanlike conduct if players use “abusive, threatening or insulting language or gestures toward opponents, teammates, officials or League representatives.”
