NFL Network: Rams release kicker Harrison Mevis, sign K Blake Grupe from Jets practice squad | Latest NFL News, Analysis and Updates
Mevis, affectionately known as “Thiccer Kicker”, has not earned fans’ affection with his performance so far this season.
After going 12-of-13 on field goal attempts and a perfect 39-for-39 on extra points during the 2025 campaign, Mevis struggled mightily in his second NFL season. Although he made all 14 of his attempts at the next point, he missed four of his nine field goals, including two in Los Angeles’ overtime loss to Buffalo.
His first miss came on a 50-yard field goal on the Rams’ first drive, which allowed the Bills to maintain a 3-0 lead. Mevis connected on his next four extra point attempts, but disaster struck again when Buffalo’s Gregory Rousseau blocked his game-winning 48-yard try in overtime. This kicking mishap was as much due to the Los Angeles lineman letting Rousseau pass as it was to Mevis, but the ball’s trajectory seemed a little low and to the left.
Grupe, 27, was claimed off waivers by New York after cutdown day in August, but was moved to the practice squad and has not kicked for the Jets this season. He previously played for the Saints and Colts and has an 81.9 completion percentage with 98.0% extra point accuracy over three seasons.
The responsibility now falls on him to help remedy Los Angeles’ problems.
