Nikon Microscopic Video Competition Winner Disqualified for Using Generative AI
Nikon says the video that initially won first place in its Small World in Motion competition “did not comply with the competition rules regarding generative AI.” BBC reports that Dr. Ning Xu’s original video purported to show “tiny hair-like structures, called cilia, moving through the airways of a child with PCD respiratory disease.” Nikon said last week it was reviewing the video following online skepticism about its authenticity.
In a comment on LinkedIn, Dr. Xu admitted to using AI for the video: “An unsupervised neural network method was then used for AI-assisted post-processing to distinguish and visualize the features of the grayscale images reconstructed from the super-resolution optical imagery. »
Dr. Xu’s video has now been disqualified and appears to have been removed from Nikon’s website. A video by Nguyen Nam Nhat now occupies the top spot, according to the contest’s updated leaderboard. Following the incident, Nikon announced its intention to “review the rules and judging procedures for future competition entries.” It also noted in its statement on the competition that the decision to disqualify Dr. Xu’s video “should not be construed as a judgment on the participant’s professional reputation, scientific contributions, or intent.”
