No Man’s Sky comes to iPhone and iPad

THE No Man’s Sky the universe is about to get a little smaller – but in a good way. Hello Games has announced that its long-running sci-fi exploration game is coming to iOS, with versions for iPhone and iPad available starting October 28.

According to Hello’s Sean Murray, the mobile version of the game is essentially the full version No Man’s Sky experience. “I guess I should say it’s not No Man’s Sky Lite,” he wrote in a blog post. It includes all of the game’s many, many updates that have been released since launch – like last year’s massive Voyagers expansion – and the only major features missing will be multiplayer and planetary colonies. Murray compares the iOS version to the game’s initial launch on the original Switch. “On Switch, we listened to players and built from there, including a much more expansive version on Switch 2,” he says. “Based on the comments and player counts, we will support iOS in the same way.

The game will be playable on iPhone 11 and iPad Air 3rd generation and later, and the studio says it costs a surprisingly low 5GB to download. It also has newly designed touch controls, as well as support for controllers, screen casting, and mouse and keyboard on the iPad. Murray also notes that “perhaps most importantly, we’ve put tons of work into battery life and thermodynamics, and we’re very proud that No Man’s Sky can be enjoyed for very long comfortable gaming sessions. The trial will be “free” at launch, although it’s unclear how much the full version will cost.

It’s now been a decade since No Man’s Sky first launched, and the game has changed drastically since its debut. iOS will join a huge list of supported platforms, including Mac, PC, and virtually every modern console, and a VR version is also available. Just as importantly, Hello has continued to keep the game vibrant with a steady stream of free expansions, including the recent Cosmos update in September, which fleshed out the vast expanse of space with more things to explore.
