WASHINGTON (TNND) — North Korean hackers stole $6.3 billion from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.

Binance said it was working with law enforcement to resolve the issue. One insider called it “the greatest bank heist in human history,” according to the New York Post.

The exchange made it clear that deposits were not affected by the hack and that they were working with partners to freeze affected assets.

A US blockchain intelligence firm called TRM Labs pinned the attack on TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit.

“We make this judgment with complete confidence,” the company said. He added that the attack is similar to other heists linked to North Korea.

“An attacker moved approximately $6.36 billion from Binance wallets across ten blockchains, most in approximately 20 minutes,” TRM said.

Richard Teng, co-chief executive officer of Binance, said the attack was complex and did not happen with a single click.

“Our initial investigation suggests that this security incident may have started with a DevOps engineer’s laptop being compromised,” he said, according to the BBC. “This allowed an attacker to access a services container, where they submitted unauthorized withdrawal transactions.”
