Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin out indefinitely
Ohio State starting quarterback Julien Sayin is out indefinitely with a right elbow injury, Ryan Day announced. Sayin was injured in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s win at No. 5. Indiana. There is no timetable for Sayin’s return this season.
Sayin injured his throwing arm when Indiana’s Mario Landino hit his shoulder sacking the quarterback and forcing a fumble in the fourth quarter. Sayin ran to the locker room and came out later with his arm in a sling.
Head coach Ryan Day said that after Saturday’s victory, he expected Sayin to be out for at least several weeks. A finalist for the Heisman Trophy in his first year as a starter, he completed 71.2% of his passes this season for 1,772 yards with 17 touchdowns for only two interceptions.
With Sayin sidelined late in the game, Day transformed into a true freshman. Luc Fahey at quarterback, who beat out second-year QB Tavian St-Clair to preseason camp for backup work. Both Fahey and St. Clair will have reps with the first team this week.
“This whole thing is bigger than one person,” Day told reporters after the game. “We definitely don’t want to see (Sayin) get hurt, and we need him. At the same time, we’ll come together and figure it out. We have a good team. When Luke is in there, we might have to do things a little differently, but the bye week gives us a chance to regroup on that and think together.”
Fahey was 0-for-2 coming off the bench for the Buckeyes and failed to pick up a first down after a late penalty on his first drive. Sayin threw two touchdown passes in the win over Indiana, including a 38-yard pass to star receiver Jeremiah Smith to extend Ohio State’s lead to 19-7.
Ohio State is off this week before traveling to USC on October 31. The Buckeyes have five games remaining on the schedule, including matchups with Oregon and Michigan.
