“Our life has changed”: two months after the double earthquake, a Venezuelan testifies – Les Observateurs

A double earthquake struck northern Venezuela on June 24, killing more than 6,500 people. About two months later, a resident of Catia La Mar, one of the affected towns, recounts how daily life was disrupted by the disaster.
When Ramon Ugueto leaves his house, he now sees piles of rubble: remnants of the buildings that collapsed or were damaged on his street on June 24.
That day, northern Venezuela was hit by a double earthquake of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5. Among the places affected: Catia La Mar, a town located on the coast, where Ramon Ugueto has lived for decades. When the earth shook, he was at home. Luckily, his building was not affected, unlike the one opposite, which collapsed before his eyes.
He then went to stay with friends for a few weeks, before returning home in mid-August, once basic services – electricity, internet and water – were restored. Even though he still has his home and his job, in this video he talks about what has changed in his daily life since his return.
The double earthquake left more than 6,500 dead and many missing. More than two months later, thousands of residents are still living in temporary shelters, while volunteer rescuers and relatives of the victims continue to search through the rubble in different places to find bodies.
