OutKick’s Craig Carton Calls WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson’s Acceptance Speech Comments a ‘Bold Lie’
Welp. Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson has, once again, put her foot in her mouth. The now five-time MVP made controversial comments regarding her upbringing during her acceptance speech for her latest award.
On Friday’s Craig Carton Show, Carton took issue with Wilson, saying, “15-year-old A’ja wasn’t sitting here dreaming of becoming a 5-time MVP. She wasn’t dreaming of being a 3-time champion. She was dreaming of surviving in this world.”
“It’s a blatant lie,” Carton said.
“You went to Heathwood Hall (Episcopal School),” Carton continued. “It’s a private school, Clarence.”
To add some context to Carton’s comments, if you were to send your child to Heathwood from first grade through high school today, it would cost nearly $260,000. That’s how stupid and tone-deaf these Wilson comments are.
“Why does A’ja Wilson cosplay like she grew up on the streets of South Carolina? Or poor? Or disenfranchised? Or without a mom and dad to raise her without love?,” Carton asked.
“The exact opposite is true,” Carton said.

These are the facts. Wilson grew up in a fairly privileged life in a stable home with his mother, Eva Rakes Wilson, and his father, Roscoe C. Wilson Jr., a former professional basketball player in Europe. They sent her to an expensive private school, a privilege that many of her fellow WNBA players, including white players, did not have.
“Is this insulting to other women in the WNBA and other people in this country, who experienced exactly this fate while growing up in a life of luxury,” Carton asked.

Carton then toned down the fact that Wilson was simply trying to promote propaganda by insinuating that she was somehow like other athletes who grew up in America’s inner cities, where drugs and violence are rampant.
“But because there’s a narrative that I can’t give up, which is, ‘Paige Bueckers, Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark grew up with ‘white privilege,’ if people found out that I grew up with the same privilege that I accuse them of having, they might look at me differently,” Carton said, as if he were Wilson.
It’s perfect. Wilson is clearly trying to portray herself as some sort of sympathetic case to the black community, whether to fit into some sort of victim narrative or to be seen as “part of the club.”
Additionally, as Carton noted, A’ja Wilson, while seated next to Kelsey Plum and another WNBA player at one of Paige Bueckers’ college games, claimed that the key to Bueckers’ success was her “white privilege.”

Speaking to Plum, Wilson said, “Paige reminds me a lot of you… She knows how her privilege got her to this point. And also, like, she’s clearly good at basketball, obviously. But like, she understands her privilege. It pushes her over the top in a sense.”
“And your privilege?” Carton addressed Wilson.

CRAIG CARTON EXPLAINS WNBA AND A’JA WILSON FOLLOWING FAN SHOWDOWN: ‘THIS LEAGUE CAN’T GET OUT OF ITS OWN WAY’
In my opinion, this is one of the most insulting things you can say to an athlete. To claim that white skin color is the reason Bueckers and other white women have had success and opportunity is madness.
Carton then asked why Wilson was embarrassed by her upbringing. “For some reason, you are embarrassed that you had everything you needed to succeed in life, both educationally and athletically, and your parents provided it for you.”
“Isn’t it a shame that you’re embarrassed by your past? Isn’t it a shame that you want to convince the American public who, for the first time, are even remotely interested in the WNBA, that at 15 years old you were just trying to find a way to survive in the big, bad world?”
Carton went on to mention that Heathbrook was also predominantly white. “There’s nothing wrong with that. You should celebrate the fact that your parents busted their asses to provide for you,” Carton said firmly.
This is where things got very interesting in Carton’s monologue. He exposed Wilson’s clear hypocritical narrative, while comparing it to Sophie Cunningham’s upbringing.

“Sophie Cunningham didn’t grow up privileged. While your parents were thriving together, which is a great story, Sophie Cunningham and her parents were kicked out of their home during the 2008 financial crisis. Has anyone told this story?”
It comes down to the simple question Carton asks: “Why cosplay if you grew up in a different way than you did?”
The answer is: It doesn’t fit the narrative she’s trying to promote as a black woman, which wants you to believe that white players basically have the upper hand over black players.

Wilson should embrace his education.
“Your story is one that should be celebrated,” Carton said. “What your parents and grandparents did to provide for you is a story that should be celebrated. You are not a statistic. You are the answer to the question that little girls in the South ask. Mom, Dad, ‘Can I?’ brothers and sisters, a lifestyle that many people in the South could never have dreamed of.
