Monitoring get China-exclusive skins and crossovers are nothing new thanks to Blizzard’s deal with NetEase to publish the hero shooter game to the territory after a brief separation in 2022but the longer it goes on, the harder it becomes to see how harsh these skins and cosmetics are. The latest line of Chinese-only cosmetics, the Defiled Anthem skins for Shion, Kiriko, D.Mon, Reaper, and Emre, include some of the coolest looks and special effects yet for these heroes, and for now, if you play the game elsewhere, all you can do is look at them like a scorned stepchild.

The Shion skin is the one that hurts the most, as it’s one of the China-exclusive Evolution-rare skins, meaning it changes appearance throughout a match. A Widowmaker skin started this trend earlier this yearthen Jetpack Cat got one in August that changed the color of her fur and costume. Now, Shion is also getting a changing, China-exclusive look.

He also, like the Mythic skins and the new (and expensive) Ultra skins, has special effects when Shion kills, as well as effects that are passively added to his abilities, such as making his motorcycle leave a trail of fire behind it while it rides.

Other heroes may not receive Evolution skins, but there are also exclusive intros and emotes that, as far as we know, won’t be available in other territories. Even if you don’t play these characters, the fact that China continues to receive exclusive content is worth getting upset about.

I wouldn’t be so angry about Chinese exclusives if they weren’t constantly releasing the best skins, emotes, and intros in the game.

This Shion skin is better than any Mythic or Ultra skin we have… pic.twitter.com/BYCA5xTjjx

I’m really starting to hate overwatch. China understands this and we get the worst skins ever @PlayOverwatch https://t.co/bph5aSlMAE

I’m sorry but this is an INSANE quality discrepancy! Global #Overwatch players don’t deserve this kind of treatment. pic.twitter.com/Z3xmCal9nt

Exclusivity is only part of the problem, but fans are also upset given what some believe to be a drop in skin quality in the main game, only for some of the nicer-looking items to be limited to China.

“I still don’t know how people are defending Blizzard for this,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “We all know that NetEase makes these skins and owns cosmetics in China, which has no correlation to the dog shit cosmetics made by Blizzard. They really need to put some effort into their skin. It’s getting so tiring, really? A $40 ultra skin with a basic mechanic and glitchy destruction effect and a mythical skin with no customization?”

Walter Kong, head of development for Blizzard’s live and mobile games division, said these exclusive events are part of its deal with NetEase, and despite fan pushback over what appears to be preferable treatment towards Chinese players, Blizzard will continue to let the publisher offer exclusives in that region.

“I think NetEase has a responsibility to publish our game in China, and part of their approach is to do things specific to that market,” Kong said in May. “And the approach we want to take is to make sure our game makes players feel supported, regardless of the market… as we look forward to future events and activations, we have a very specific vision: ‘Is this just the right way to do the event?’ and from a holistic perspective, “How do things balance?” »

MonitoringThe story-based reboot that began earlier this year is still underway. Season five is set to begin tomorrow, October 6, with the addition of a new hero. Doctrine.
