Paramount’s new name Warner Bros. is Skydance, says David Ellison

The entertainment industry’s newest conglomerate has a name: Skydance.

David Ellison shared on Friday on X that once Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merged, the new corporate brand will take the name of the studio he founded 20 years ago. But even though that will be the company name, Paramount and Warner Bros. will serve as sub-brands.

“Both have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations,” Ellison wrote. “We wanted a name that would give the combined company its own identity while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. – and all of our extraordinary brands – to remain in the spotlight.”

The name answers one of the biggest unanswered questions about the new company, which will undoubtedly be one of the biggest in the industry, alongside The Walt Disney Co. and Netflix.

In the entertainment business, the truth is that the company’s brand doesn’t always matter. This is the case for Disney, which is synonymous with a certain type of family content, and for Netflix, which is synonymous with streaming, but the industry past and present has been filled with owners with names like Comcast, Viacom, News Corp., Versant, Capital Cities, etc. Names barely familiar to most consumers.

For most public companies, a corporate name is just a corporate name, a consumer-facing “house of brands,” even though they may share the name of a movie studio.

Ellison founded the Skydance film studio in 2006 and used it as a vehicle to acquire Paramount last year, before moving to Warner Bros. Discovery shortly after.

He also released an exciting video featuring footage from some of the combined company’s film and TV projects, ending with a title card that perhaps indicates how one thinks about the individual brands that will live within Skydance.

The card features the Skydance logo in the middle, surrounded by the logos of the Paramount and Warners film studios, CBS, HBO Max, Paramount+, DC Comics, Nickelodeon and CNN, suggesting the importance of these brands in the broader strategy. Reading between the lines, one gets the sense that movie studios and streaming platforms will retain their own identities, with CBS (sports and broadcast), Nickelodeon (kids and family), and CNN (news) anchoring their own sectors of the business.

“We have big goals for Skydance and we intend to pursue them with passion, imagination and a willingness to take smart risks,” Ellison wrote. “At the same time, we will honor what makes Paramount and Warner Bros. special: giving both studios the opportunity to grow, tell more great stories, and deliver those stories to an even wider audience around the world, thanks to the scale and capabilities of Skydance.”

The $111 billion mega-merger is expected to be finalized next week, with Ellison joined by former Mattel chief Ynon Kreiz as co-CEO. The other members of the management team are still being selected.
