Parents of toddler who loaded gun in bag at Detroit daycare to face charges | Michigan
The parents of a Detroit-area child who pulled a loaded gun from his backpack at a daycare will face charges in the case, police said Wednesday.
In a statement, Canton Township police said the parents will make their first court appearance Thursday. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office declined to provide additional details or comment, saying it would wait until a judge approves the charges.
No one was injured Monday when the boy held a holstered gun at the Children’s World Early Learning Center. Joseph Bialy, cantonal police chief, congratulated a member of staff for his quick and safe intervention.
One of the child’s parents is a Detroit area police officer, Bialy said earlier this week, although the weapon was not described as a work firearm. The chief said it was “shocking” to see video of the boy handling the weapon.
“The video is difficult to watch, but I am reassured that no one was hurt,” Bialy told reporters.
Under Michigan law, firearms must be kept locked up in the home when children are present. Penalties depend on the facts of each case, but are significantly increased if a gun is fired and a person is injured or killed.
