Patient Disputed $85,000 Hospital Bill, Then AI Analysis Added Nearly $20,000 More
A hospital bill that was already $85,000 reportedly got even worse after a patient disputed it. The situation got even worse when the hospital appeared to use artificial intelligence tools to increase the amount owed by the patient.
Here’s what you need to know
In a TikTok video, a social worker who goes by the name Aaron the Social Worker (@aaronthesocialworker) said the hospital used AI to review the patient’s visit, identified nearly $20,000 in additional charges and increased the revised total to $102,000.
The video centers around a call Aaron says he made about the updated bill. In his account, the patient disputed the initial accusations; the hospital re-examined the account and said some charges had been omitted from the first bill.
In addition to asking if the additional charges have been sent to insurance and processed, Aaron also asks for details in the video: “OK, what charges? For what services and for what days.”
After stating that the hospital “did an AI analysis of his visit,” Aaron adds, “The bill was already $85,000. Now the revised bill brings it to $102,000.”
The reaction in the comments was critical, with many questioning whether the practice was legal or a “massive (HIPAA) violation.”
“If the AI finds another $20,000, someone didn’t do their job in the first place,” one user commented.
More information
Aaron describes the situation as particularly difficult because the patient already could not pay. During the call, he says the patient “already can’t pay the bill” and wonders why speaking out led to a response of: “Congratulations.” Here’s a bigger financial bill.
Aaron also raises a broader concern: “Also, what are the ethics of using AI to scan a patient’s bill?
Commenters on TikTok suggested this was far from an old misuse of technology.
“AI is in doctors’ offices,” one said. “It’s been a nightmare.”
Other commenters suggested that the higher bill was a “punishment” and an intentional deterrent for patients questioning high medical bills.
What can we do?
In the video, Aaron seeks a more detailed accounting instead of just accepting the new total. He asks what the additional charges were for and what dates of the patient’s care they covered.
He also pressed for clarity on insurance, asking whether the hospital submitted these additional charges and whether that process was completed.
After learning that the increase came from an AI scan, he asks, “Is this standard practice?”
He argues that patients should be able to question a hospital bill without worrying about a higher price down the road: “Patients shouldn’t have to question a hospital bill without wondering if the price is going to be, you know, increased down the road.”
“We already can’t afford medical care the way it is,” lamented one TikTok viewer. “We don’t need AI to add more.”
Where can I find out more?
Some of the issues raised by Aaron and viewers are pervasive in the infiltration of AI into the healthcare and insurance industries.
• In Congress, lawmakers have pushed to end denials of AI-related claims after patients were allegedly left behind.
• Researchers found that very small words changed the responses of healthcare chatbots in worrying ways.
