Mickelson allegedly checked in voluntarily and had already left the facility. He was “seeking treatment for family trauma and addiction,” a rep for Mickelson told TMZ. Other details are not yet known.
Mickelson announced before the Masters in April that he was stepping away from golf due to a “personal health issue” in his family. He didn’t go into detail, but he hasn’t played anywhere since. It was briefly introduced in the field at the PGA Championship in Maybut withdrew and said he “unfortunately” could not play.
Mickelson was also accused of inappropriate conduct at Farms Golf Club near San Diego earlier this year, and he is no longer a member of that club. Mickelson was accused of “non-consensual and inappropriate physical conduct” by a female employee before a tour. Mickelson’s spokesperson called it a “misunderstanding” that has “been cleared up.”
Mickelson has spoken openly about his gambling addiction in the past too. A book published in 2023 even claimed that Mickelson bet a total of at least $1 billion and that his losses were as much as $100 million. He even allegedly bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup while on the team, although he denied it, and his longtime playing partner, Billy Walters, was convicted of insider trading in 2017. Mickelson had to forfeit nearly $1 million in income earned from stock tips he received from Walters in the case.

Mickelson was once a dominant force on the PGA Tour. He has won 45 times on Tour and has six major championship titles to his name, most recently at the PGA Championship in 2021. He was also a driving force behind the creation of LIV Golf and the subsequent feuds within the sport. He attracted a lot of criticism for the comments it discussed a partnership with Saudi Arabia early on, even though LIV Golf has since lost its funding from the country’s Public Investment Fund. Mickelson only competed in one LIV Golf event last season.
With the future of LIV Golf up in the air and Mickelson still away from competitive golf and facing off-course issues, it’s unclear when he might return.
