Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to miss Panthers game due to blood clot
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the team’s Week 6 game against the Carolina Panthers due to a blood clot in his calf, the team announced Thursday.
Hurts first visited the training room on Oct. 8 to repair his calf the week after a loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the Eagles said in a statement. The team performed an ultrasound Saturday “out of an abundance of caution” after Philadelphia flew to London for its Week 6 game, when a superficial blood clot was discovered.
Hurts again played every snap in the Eagles’ 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, completing 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards. He had his fewest rushing attempts of the season, rushing only twice for 2 yards.
“Our medical staff and physicians in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were significant and that (Hurts) was safe to play,” the statement said, adding that Hurts was “playing without limitations.”
Hurts received calf treatment Monday and Tuesday, according to the team, and fully participated in practice Wednesday. A follow-up ultrasound Wednesday evening, however, revealed the presence of a small blood clot.
Hurss “will be out for Sunday’s game against the Panthers while we determine appropriate treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority,” the statement said.
Hurts, 28, led the Eagles to an NFL championship in February 2025. He was named Super Bowl 59 MVP after throwing two touchdowns and rushing for another.
This season, he has started all five games for Philadelphia, completing 57.8 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran the ball 23 times for 107 yards and one additional score.
After winning their first two games, the Eagles lost three in a row. To make matters worse, Hurts is far from the only offensive player dealing with an injury or medical issue.
Running back Saquon Barkley and starting receiver DeVonta Smith did not practice Wednesday due to hamstring injuries. Guard Landon Dickerson and receiver Dontayvion Wicks were also limited participants due to knee and hamstring injuries, respectively.
Right tackle Lane Johnson, widely considered one of the best players at his position, announced his retirement this month, citing personal and family priorities as he chose to focus on his mental health.
Philadelphia has had great offensive difficulties this season. Heading into Week 6, the Eagles rank second to last in total yards per game, 28th in passing yards per game, and 29th in points per game.
Philadelphia’s backup quarterback is Tanner McKee, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
McKee has yet to appear in a game this season. In six career appearances, including two starts, he completed 54 of 88 passes for 597 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He has a career passer rating of 95.7.
