“He fought valiantly, but he lost his life today,” Bethel told reporters at a news conference. “Luckily his wife was able to be by his side before he passed away, as well as his family.”
Seiber’s partner, whom the commissioner identified as a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times and underwent surgery. He was in stable condition Saturday, with Bethel adding that he was “not out of the woods yet.”
The Philadelphia killing adds to a growing national toll with consequences beyond the workplace, leaving families and colleagues to bear the loss of 31 law enforcement officers criminally killed in the line of duty so far this year, according to the FBI.
Shortly after midnight Saturday, a report of an armed man on a porch brought the two officers to the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia, where stretches of brick rowhouses sit behind short staircases and small yards.
As the officers walked up the steps to a porch surrounded by an iron fence, the gunman opened fire. Police have not said where the suspect was when he started shooting.
At one point during the incident, Bethel said, the shooter took the gun from one of the injured officers lying in the entryway.
The gunshots drew more officers to the block. The shooter fired at police as they responded to support Seiber and his partner, Bethel said. SWAT was dispatched and officers eventually located the suspect in a tree.
Police recovered a shotgun and two handguns – including the gun taken from one of the officers – from the suspect, and the man was taken into custody.
Eric Lewis, 35, is charged with homicide for Seiber’s killing, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said Saturday afternoon. Lewis faces a host of other charges, including attempted homicide, for allegedly shooting the second officer and shooting at nine other officers who responded to the scene, Krasner said.
Lewis had previously been convicted of criminal offenses including assault, robbery and public carrying of a firearm, The Associated Press reported, citing court records.
Lewis is being held without bail and will be arraigned soon, Krasner said. The suspect was not seriously injured.
“This is a brutal, senseless and horrific murder,” Krasner said.
CNN is working to determine whether Lewis has legal representation.
The Philadelphia incident follows another shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, and the two successive deadly incidents have put the state at the center of attention as the nation continues to reckon with the devastating human toll of gun violence.
More than 300 miles away on 52nd Street, officers arrived at an Erie home Friday and found nine people shot, including two children, a pregnant woman and the suspected shooter, who killed himself. Police said the 45-year-old shooter was linked to seven of the victims.
The shock of violence reverberated throughout the Keystone State.
In response to the Erie shooting and Saturday’s shooting of police, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker is calling on Gov. Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office to work together to expand involuntary commitment laws.
The new guidelines “would cover not only serious mental illnesses, but also substance use disorders and any type of mental and/or behavioral challenge that could interfere with Philadelphia’s ability to keep itself safe,” Parker said during a news conference Saturday.
Involuntary commitment laws give authorities the power to require involuntary psychiatric care for a person in a mental health crisis who poses a danger to themselves or others or who cannot meet their basic survival needs, although different states set very different thresholds.
Krasner called it “premature” to comment on whether substance use disorder or mental illness was an aspect of the case.
Meanwhile, Pennsylvania authorities’ social media accounts have become a rolling chronicle of shootings across the state, from Philadelphia to Erie.
“We are keeping everyone affected in our thoughts today and we hope for a full and speedy recovery for the other officer,” Sen. John Fetterman wrote on X.
Shapiro ordered that all U.S. and national flags be flown at half-staff in Seiber’s memory.
“Our law enforcement officers are the best among us,” he wrote.
