Photos and videos: Maryland and Delaware beaches in the Nor’easter books

A powerful early-season coastal storm – or nor’easter – is hitting beaches in Maryland and Delaware.

The massive storm has triggered high wind warnings, coastal flooding warnings and strong surf and rip current advisories, which are in effect through Sunday.

The National Weather Service predicts “two to three feet of flooding above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal channels” and “large breaking waves of up to 11 feet in the surf zone.”

The storm was responsible for the cancellation of the Oceans Calling music festival in Ocean City, Maryland.

Wind gusts reached 58 mph in southern Delaware, just north of Bethany Beach, while gusts over 40 mph were widespread throughout the Delmarva Peninsula.

Beaches were damaged, with water flowing up to the dunes and, in some cases, breaking them up. Significant erosion occurs.

Because the storm is moving so slowly, the prolonged pounding of the ocean could cause significant damage. Conditions are expected to gradually improve on Monday.
