Police raid home of late New York Times technical director’s wife after her parents are arrested

Police officers descended on the home of the ex-wife of slain New York Times technical director Jonathan McKinsey on Tuesday evening – with several officers seen entering her gated community residence while her parents were in jail, accused of shooting him to death.

Video from Tuesday shows officers arriving at what appear to be townhouses inside the gated community around 7 p.m.

They knocked on the door several times until someone came out and opened it.

The police then invaded the residence one by one, finally leaving the residence around 9 p.m.

No arrests were made during the search and no property was seized by police.

The police activity comes just days after McKinsey, 40, was allegedly shot to death in Northern California by his elderly Chinese in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77.

Police said the shooting happened around 3 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds.

Witnesses said Zhang and Chen took turns shooting at McKinsey.

The New York Times confirmed that McKinsey was the victim and said he had worked for the paper since 2023. He was responsible for engineering the Times’ game player experience.

McKinsey and his ex-wife, Candice Jang, found themselves engaged in a bitter custody battle over their children at the time of his death.

Court records reviewed by The Post show McKinsey was charged with two counts of child abuse by Alameda prosecutors in 2025.

A restraining order filed by McKinsey against Jang indicates that Chen visited the couple in 2023 to watch their children.

Court documents also show that a grandmother who allegedly shot her New York Times transgender son-in-law accused him of inspiring her grandson to wear his sister’s dresses.

McKinsey’s cousin, Lovell Garner, told the California Post that the family was still struggling to understand the killing.

“Well, it’s all still pretty fresh to me,” Garner said. “So far, everyone in my immediate family is completely shocked. It seems obvious that they are done with him since they killed him. I don’t know what would make them do something so extreme.”

Zhang and Chen remain in prison as the investigation into the McKinsey murder continues.
