One in four Asset voters say GOP candidates should break with president to win in November, according to the latest POLITICO pollconducted by the independent firm PF Global.

The results underscore how well even loyal Republicans understand the president Donald Trump is a brake on the ticket. Persistent inflation, the price of gasoline at $4, mortgage rates at 7%, the quagmire in the Middle East and the trade war with Canada have provided Republican candidates with no shortage of opportunities to take the president to task.

Republican candidate for Michigan Senate Mike Rogers this week became the latest example when it called at the end to the “tariff war” with Canada — a notable change after he spent weeks defending the president’s decision.

“It was great to Mike Rogers …when you talk about the issue of affordability, in every poll I get, every week, more and more people see that as their number one issue,” said a Michigan-based GOP consultant.
