Louis PrevostPope Leo XIV’s older brother, who lives in Florida, suffers from multiple myeloma, his wife told CBS News on Tuesday. The news comes as the Vatican previously announced that the the pope was diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery to remove a nodular lesion from his right lung.
Deborah Prevost did not say what stage Louis’ cancer is in, but said he is currently participating in a clinical trial at a local hospital where he is being treated.
Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that affects plasma cells, according to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
Deborah Prevost said Louis was first diagnosed in 2017, but was able to keep it at a “very low level” after undergoing treatment in 2019 that included stem cell treatment and a clinical trial. He “went into remission” three months ago, she said.
She could not comment on the details of Pope Leo’s condition, but said her husband and brother spoke last week before Louis went to his clinical trial.
“He called to let us know what was going to happen,” Deborah said. “We continue to pray, to keep morale high for both of them.”
Pope Leo underwent surgery on Tuesday who confirmed he was suffering from lung cancer, the Vatican said earlier today. The 71-year-old pontiff was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma.
The Vatican did not reveal what stage the cancer was in or whether it may have spread. Nor does it detail any additional procedures the pope might need to follow.
Deborah Prevost told CBS News the family was “going through a lot,” but she hoped Leo’s cancer was in its very early stages. She said she hasn’t heard of any potential radiation or chemotherapy treatments.

Pope Leo was the first American-born leader of the Catholic Church. He grew up alongside his two older siblings, Louis and John, in the Chicago area.
“While I was playing boy games, you know, whether it was baseball, cops and robbers, tag, flashlight, whatever the kids’ games were, Rob liked to play priest,” Louis Prevost told CBS News at the time. “He has had this vocation for a long time.”
