President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday directing the federal government to replace the term “artificial intelligence” with “superintelligence” throughout the executive branch, cementing a rebranding effort he has championed in recent weeks.
Signed after a White House summit with top technology executives, the order directs federal agencies to use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents and other non-statutory documents.
The order also directs agencies to “no longer recognize” the terms “artificial intelligence” and “AI,” according to the White House.
The order further directs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology to develop a federal definition of SI and to recommend any additional executive actions necessary to implement the new terminology.

Trump argued that AI no longer reflects the technology’s rapidly evolving capabilities, saying IS better captures its promise and potential.
“The term ‘Super Intelligence’ more appropriately describes the promise, potential, and rapidly evolving capabilities of these technologies,” Trump wrote.
He also wrote that modern AI systems increasingly amplify human ingenuity and pave the way for new forms of creativity, saying they represent the start of a new era of IS.
The move follows remarks Trump made at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last week, where he publicly called for replacing the term “artificial intelligence” with SI.

“Whoever wins AI, you have to remember that, and now I say whoever wins IS, whoever wins superintelligence, wins. That’s the group that wins,” Trump said at the time.
The executive order also comes as governments and technology companies continue to debate how rapidly evolving AI systems should be governed.
At a White House roundtable with tech executives, Trump, who has opposed imposing formal guardrails on IS, said participants signed a document at the end of the meeting.
Trump added that the document, called the White House Super Intelligence Accord, is “morally binding” on the leaders who signed it.
“They almost looked at it as a sort of separate constitution,” Trump said of the tech leaders. “When they signed that, it meant a lot.”

After Tuesday’s White House summit, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said participants focused on striking the “right balance” between “the interests of the American people,” technological advancement and maintaining the United States’ competitive advantage over China.
“This is a statement of principles that you will see, a statement of standards, of voluntary commitments from the industry. It sets out expectations,” Johnson said. “In short, it’s about robust internal controls and multiple layers of internal and external review.”
On Tuesday evening, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on X that he considered the summit a “positive step.”
“I believe that the fact that the leaders of all major U.S. laboratories have committed to implementing robust internal controls and multiple levels of audits and reviews is a significant positive step,” Zuckerberg wrote.
