The United States faced a huge and virtually unprecedented challenge in this year’s Presidents Cup, needing a rally Sunday at Medinah Country Club to retain a Cup that the Americans have owned for almost the entire existence of the event. Before this year, the United States had a 13-1-1 record against the international team, yet needed to come back from three points behind on Sunday to retain the cup.
A combination of bad play, bad luck and poor strategy put the Americans in this hole. Team captain Brandt Snedeker looked to rally the United States with a fast start, beating Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler in the first four matches in hopes of building momentum that will inspire the next eight players.

International team captain Geoff Ogilvy, meanwhile, scattered his stars throughout Sunday’s lineup. The Internationals proved their resilience throughout this event, coming together time and time again to claim multiple points that the United States could have, or even should have, won.
A score of 15.5 won the Presidents Cup, meaning the United States needed to double the score it posted in the first four rounds to win. The Internationals, meanwhile, needed just five points from 12 matches to pull off a stunning upset, but fell short.
