For the study, which will be presented at the 2026 European Society of Medical Oncology Congress in Madrid, researchers looked at the Decipher scores of more than 6,000 men.

The findings come from the UCL team who carried out the Stampede clinical trial, which found the drug abiraterone could be given to high-risk cases, halving the risk of death from the disease and slowing overall progression.

The drug works by stopping testosterone from fueling prostate cancer.

In January, the NHS expanded access to abiraterone to make it available to more than 7,000 more men a year, at an earlier stage, when its impact is greater.

The country’s top oncologist says Britain is turning the tide on the disease, with campaigners hoping expanded access to abiraterone could save 3,000 lives.

Previously it was only available to those whose cancer had spread, but NHS England expanded it to include men whose high-risk cancer had not yet spread.
