Quentin Tarantino had quite a surprise in store for us Friday evening.
The filmmaker was present at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles for a screening of Once upon a time in Hollywoodthen sitting down for a Q&A session about his hit film. But just as the evening seemed to be coming to a close, Tarantino surprised the TCL Chinese Theater crowd with a first look at The other misadventures of Cliff Boothshowing the first 17 minutes of the follow-up film.
Tarantino wrote the screenplay for Cliff Standwith David Fincher stepping in to direct this time around. The new project sees Brad Pitt reprise his Oscar-winning role as voice actor Booth and is set in 1977, eight years after the events of Once upon a time.
Before showing the footage – which saw Booth working as a cinema projectionist while dealing in more unsavory business – Tarantino explained his decision to revisit the character in the first place.
“I tend not to remember my good reviews in quotes; I kind of remember my bad reviews in quotes, but I don’t really remember my good reviews in quotes. But one quote that I remember someone wrote about Once upon a time in Hollywoodit was like, ‘This seems like the first world that Quentin Tarantino has ever created that he would like to live in,’ and there’s this aspect,” he told the crowd. “I loved the character of Cliff Booth, I loved the way Brad played him, and there was this aspect of him as a pocket hero. I could see it as a paperback series with Cliff Booth involved in this adventure or that adventure or something.
Tarantino continued: “As time went on, I just thought about imagining a different adventure, putting him in a misadventure. I wanted to see what would happen with that.” He also noted how deeply he immersed himself in the world of film – having also written a Once upon a time novel – and explained: “I don’t have to do anything except invest in this mythology. I invested in it before I made the film, and then I invested in it in the years after I made the film, just to know the mythology. The audience doesn’t need to know everything, but it’s pretty good that I know everything, and you can trust me, I do.”
During the conversation, Tarantino also revealed that “if I had to watch one of my movies, it would be this one,” and it’s a movie he can watch over and over again. He added, “Don’t get me wrong, I love my stories. I really, really love my stories and I’m invested in my stories. But I like that there’s not really a story. I like that you just hang out with them.”
About to embark on rehearsals for his next play, Tarantino explained that his current mindset is to be a writer first, as was implemented by choosing not to direct. Cliff Stand. “As I get older, being a man of letters is more and more my thing,” he noted, “so screenplays and books and plays – anything but poetry. »
The other misadventures of Cliff Booth is released in IMAX on November 25 and streamed on December 23 on Netflix.
