Rafael Camara: Haas recruits Brazilian for F1 debut in 2027 season
Brazilian Rafael Camara will join the US-based Haas team for its debut Formula 1 season in 2027.
The 21-year-old driver, leader of the Formula 2 championship, was chosen after a selection process including four drivers in total.
Camara was chosen over reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and Haas reserve drivers Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa after being evaluated in tests on previous years’ F1 cars.
Camara, Fornaroli and Hirakawa were all assessed during a test at Portugal’s Portimao circuit in August, Doohan separately.
“I’m really excited to sign such a young and incredible talent like Rafael Camara,” said Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu.
“He showed when we ran him in our program in Portugal that he could do very well with little time to learn the car. He showed us more than just raw speed.”
“Rafa managed to create an environment to get the best out of himself, it was very impressive and the tricks he performed were certainly special.”
Haas has not said who will drive its other car next season, but it is only a matter of time before Briton Oliver Bearman is confirmed behind the wheel for a third season.
Both Bearman and Camara are members of the Ferrari driver academy.
Frenchman Esteban Ocon will leave the team at the end of the year after two seasons alongside Bearman, Haas confirmed late last month.
Camara said: “This is an important step in my career and I would like to thank (owner) Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for the trust they have placed in me.
“Now my goal is to prepare myself in the best possible way for this new challenge.
“There will be a lot to learn and I look forward to working closely with the team, understanding the car and continuing to develop as a driver.”
