Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay was seething after his club missed a chance to win Monday night with a blocked field goal, ultimately losing 37-34 to the Buffalo Bills in overtime.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been this upset after a game,” McVay told reporters.

McVay had every right to be upset. He should first direct his anger at the man in the mirror.

The coach’s decision to take his foot off the gas after the Rams got past the 35-yard line on the final drive was an inexcusable blunder. Rams kicker Harrison Mevis has already missed a kick on the night and doesn’t have the strongest leg. To settle for a 48-yard kick was to invite trouble.

The Rams’ special teams have long been a problem. The team did not resolve the issue during the offseason and the issues surfaced Monday night. From the jump, the unit was shaky, allowing Ray Davis to return a kickoff 70 yards. On the Rams’ first drive, Mevis missed a 50-yard field goal. Then came the blockage.

McVay said he plans to “evaluate everything” regarding his kicking unit.

“In the running game, especially with our PAT, the field goal, not even good enough,” he said. “It cost us the game tonight.”

Special teams have always been a blind spot for McVay. Monday’s block was Los Angeles’ third since the start of 2025, and they have missed or seen kicks blocked 81 times during McVay’s tenure, according to ESPN.

“I felt like I hit it pretty well,” Mevis said, according to the Associated Press. “That’s all I can tell you. I mean, I did well, I gave it a chance. I’ll have to watch.”

On a night when Matthew Stafford looked like his MVP self, throwing for 383 yards on 40-of-54 passing with three TDs and zero INTs, the other phases cost them the game. The Rams’ D was crushed by James Cook (25/111/2) and Josh Allen (10/121/1). As the Rams slowed down the pass rush, they were burned by penalties that set up the Bills’ scores.

Ultimately, it was the special teams unit that took the blame for not finishing the game when they had the chance. McVay acknowledged he should have tried to get much closer before settling for the onside kick in overtime.

“I’m sick that we failed, and I’ll regret giving that kick and not having had a better choice to be able to go for it on third down and go to fourth down or whatever,” McVay said. “And it’s my fault.”

The Rams fell to 2-3, 3.5 games behind the division-leading San Francisco 49ers.
