Reaction: Constantino criticizes GOP leaders in social media rants
AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (WWNY) – Republican candidate Anthony Constantino, who continues to lead Democrat Blake Gendebien by 6,000 votes in the race for New York’s 21st Congressional District, took to social media to insult GOP leaders overnight.
Messages target state and county GOP leaders
Fresh off his profanity-filled victory speech Tuesday night, Constantino spent early Wednesday morning creating a series of online posts.
In one article, he called state Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox “dumb as a rock.”
In another, he takes aim at each of NY-21’s 15 Republican county committees, calling their chairmen a “group of crooks” before saying most state GOPs are “a scam.”
County committees backed Smullen ahead of primaries
Most of the district’s county Republican committees had supported Constantino’s rival, Robert Smullen, before the Republican primary. After Constantino won the primary, all the county Republican committee chairmen united behind Constantino.
Mike Young is the chairman of the Lewis County Republican Committee, which hosted Constantino as a guest speaker at a dinner last week.
“I don’t know what to say. We work for our candidates. We respect the decision of our voters when they make decisions about primaries. You know, I don’t know what to say about that,” Young said.
Articles about Blakeman
As for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman, Constantino wrote that he was “supported by the evil media and the Democratic machine” and that he was “wandering like a headless chicken going from stupid dinner to stupid dinner and charming the ‘party’ while ignoring people.”
During his campaign, Constantino encouraged people to vote for Blakeman.
A journalist excluded from election night
This series of messages came after Constantino denounced the “evil media” and, at one point, ordered his security staff to remove 7 News reporter Garrett Domblewski and our cameraman from his election night party.
7 News had been invited to the event and Dumblewski didn’t know why Constantino chose him. Dumblewski said he had a cordial conversation with Constantino earlier in the evening.
Jefferson County Chairman Responds
Don Coon, chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Committee, said he wasn’t particularly offended by the social media posts, but doesn’t think the Sticker Mule CEO is doing himself any favors by entering Congress.
“He likes to insult people and he likes to be Trump-like in his delivery. I just think it’s stupid. I don’t think he would speak to his clients the same way he spoke to people last night, and I think he should keep that in mind.”
