Red Sox lose to Yankees, out of Wild Card Series
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire —
Boston Red Sox fans woke up Thursday morning to some disappointment after the team was eliminated by the New York Yankees, 9-2 in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series.
Hours before the game, Sox outfielder Roman Anthony was removed from the roster due to a hand injury that worsened in Tuesday’s opener.
However, Anthony’s absence proved to be a non-factor in Game 2 as the Red Sox only managed to score 2 runs on 4 hits.
Willson Contreras and Nick Sogard hit home runs in the losing effort.
New York’s Luis Garcia Jr. hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for the Yankees. New York had a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Sox manager Chad Tracy retired starting pitcher Sonny Gray after just 70 pitches. Reliever Erik Miller gave up an RBI single to Cody Bellinger and New York took a 2-0 lead.
The Sox bullpen imploded in the sixth inning, giving up six runs, including four by Garrett Crochet, who pitched his first game since April 29.
Boston concludes its season having made the playoffs for a second straight year, losing to New York in back-to-back seasons.
