Red Sox vs. Yankees live updates, news, starting pitchers for Game 2: Sonny Gray, Max Fried take the mound Wednesday
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees return to the Bronx on Wednesday for Game 2 of their AL wild-card series, with the Yankees holding a 1-0 series lead thanks to Tuesday’s 9-0 shutout.
Facing elimination, the Red Sox will turn to right-hander Sonny Gray, who led the majors with an 18-5 record this season to go with a 2.72 ERA. Max Fried takes the mound for New York after a near-flawless performance from Cam Schlittler in Game 1, in which he struck out 10 and allowed just two hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Yankees threatened to add more runs with a Spencer Jones single after Garcia’s homer, but a George Lombard Jr. strikeout and Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s leadoff double play ended the fourth without further damage. Gray is at 57 locations.
Luis Garcia Jr. was one of the Yankees’ acquisitions at the trade deadline, and he just paid off big with a solo home run to open the scoring.

We’re scoreless through three, with Gray working around a one-out single from Ryan MacMahon. He’s at 43 pitches, with Fried at 44, in what’s shaping up to be a pitchers’ duel so far.

Nate Eaton takes a hit to center field and turns it into a double, probably thanks to good scouting by the Red Sox. Yankees center fielder Trent Grisham has had emergency problems on shallow balls before, and Eaton made him pay there.
However, Fried stranded the runner with a strikeout from Jahmai Jones and a groundout from Adley Rutschman. Still scoreless at Yankee Stadium.

Sonny Gray posted a 1-2-3 inning on 11 pitches, including a strikeout of Game 1 hero Ben Rice.
Fried had to go the full count against Jahmai Jones and Adley Rutschman, but he got the strikeout against Boston’s two best hitters. Willson Conteras then singled with two outs, but Fried ended the inning with a flyout from Wilyer Abreu.
A scoreless inning of 21 pitches for Fried.

Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony will miss the remainder of the team’s American League wild-card series against the New York Yankees.
Anthony was removed in Boston’s Game 1 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday. He was later diagnosed with damage to his wrist muscles. Anthony also reportedly aggravated the hand injury that hampered him throughout the 2026 season.
Manager Chad Tracy discussed the injury Wednesday.
“He was fired last night after leaving the game,” Tracy said. “We sent him back to Boston for additional imaging tests which revealed new strains on different muscles in his wrist in addition to exasperating the old injuries. It’s not great.”
Anthony spoke with the media and was clearly still dealing with the impact of his diagnosis.
“My stomach hurts. I haven’t slept much. It doesn’t seem real… to receive the same news again, and worse… it’s hard.”
The Red Sox outfielder is out “for the foreseeable future.” Anthony started Game 1 Tuesday as the designated hitter, batting first. He went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts.
MLB approved a roster change, allowing Curtis Mead to take Anthony’s place on the Red Sox roster for the remainder of the series.

Red Sox leadoff hitter Roman Anthony was replaced in the sixth inning due to right hand discomfort after a ring finger ligament injury in the same hand sidelined Anthony for most of the regular season.
Manager Chad Tracy told reporters after the game that “his hand went up on him” and he doesn’t know if Anthony will have to undergo imaging or if he will be available Wednesday.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the team was still evaluating whether or not to replace him on the wild-card roster, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reports.
