The ultra-obscure and hard-to-find Japanese PC game celebrated two milestones this year: a quarter century and its liberation from a mysterious patent troll. The dreamlike odyssey has often raised more questions than answers, and it has even more to offer. Looks like it’s hardcore Biscuit Fans were invited to a secret party on Friday, including the lucky few who bothered to send in their 1999 registration cards.

Over the weekend, openings emerged from Tokyo for a role held by QualityTime Consulting, a Japanese technology company. Although it was created in 2006, the evening was to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The cookie hustle (even though it’s technically the 27th anniversary of The cookie hustle). Described as a “secret 25th event” by the merch and a “time capsule event” by others, the party had live musicians playing tunes from the game, exclusive gifts, a person dressed as Cookie herself, and cookies shaped like Cookie herself. Although participants were apparently asked not to take photos, news of the event nevertheless spread to the outside world.
Released in 1999, Cookie’s Bustle: The Mysterious World of Bombs is a surreal point-and-click adventure game. The game follows Cookie, a girl from Jersey who believes she is a bear (and certainly looks like one) traveling to an isolated island nation founded by aliens to participate in their sports games. There, Cookie is drawn into a violent revolution, nicely.
While Japan had a PC gaming scene in the 90s, it was a microcosm compared to local console support or overseas PC development. As such, Japanese PC games are largely obscure and difficult to track down. As Garage: Bad Dream Adventure, Zeddas, Kyoto Cosmology and others, Biscuit has developed a fervent following over the ages. But its greatest infamy has less to do with the game itself than with conflicting ownership claims.
When videos started disappearing from ClassicsOfGame’s detailed YouTube page, fans spotted an individual who seemed determined to erase The cookie hustlethe entire digital footprint of . The individual known as Brandon White circumvented copyright laws to order the DMCA takedown. While attempts to contact the game’s true creator, Keisuke Harigai, were unsuccessful, the Video Game History Foundation used its own legislation to quell the patent troll in March. It seems Cookie’s mysterious journey isn’t over. QTC’s relationship to the big yellow teddy bear is unclear (and digging through the Wayback file on its website yielded no familiar names), but someone on the planning committee must have had access to the registration cards mailed out before the millennium. Attendees didn’t mention any announcements of re-releases, remasters, or sequels, but it certainly appears this “long hibernation” is coming to an end. And God help us all when she wakes up.
