Report: Lions and Sam LaPorta break off contract extension talks
The chances of tight end Sam LaPorta hitting free agency next year look a little better.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that LaPorta and the Lions broke off negotiations on a contract extension. The 2023 second-round pick is in the final year of his rookie contract.
LaPorta and the Lions could revisit discussions later in the season or early in the offseason. The team could also use the franchise tag to retain LaPorta, so it’s not clear whether he will talk to other teams in March.
LaPorta has 14 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown so far this season.
