Report: No new contract for Joey Porter Jr. in Dallas (at least for now)
Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. wanted a new contract. He didn’t have any. He wanted an exchange. He had one.
So now he’s going to get a new contract, right?
False, perhaps.
Via Clarence Hill Jr. of Fort Worth Star TelegramPorter’s trade from Steelers to Cowboys comes without new contract.
The Cowboys inherit the remaining $3.052 million of his $3.924 million base salary for 2026. They also acquire the option to apply the franchise tag to Porter in 2027.
With the 2026 franchise tag for cornerbacks at $21.161 million and the market well above $30 million, the Cowboys might be tempted to tag Porter and punt.
They could also let him go, harvest a compensatory third-round pick in 2028 and thus offset the second-round pick they send to the Steelers that year (and the sixth-round pick in 2027).
For both camps, this decision smacked of desperation. The Cowboys are desperate to improve their defense. And the Steelers were desperate to break a contract impasse with no middle ground.
