Report: Vikings trending towards starting Carson Wentz on Monday night
THE Kyler Murray soft bench in favor of backup Carson Wentz could come Monday night against the Bills.
Officially, the Vikings say they are evaluating Murray’s hamstring injury, but not evaluating whether Wentz is the quarterback who gives them a better chance of winning. But Adam Schefter reported on ESPN today that the Vikings appear to be headed toward Wentz starting against the Bills. This could be due to both Murray’s injury and his ineffectiveness.
“His status for Monday night is uncertain at best, and it appears the trend is toward Carson Wentz starting Monday night,” Schefter said. “Everybody’s been watching the games. It looks like right now there’s a question about the quarterback position and how they’re going to handle that. And Carson Wentz looks like he’s in line to start Monday night, and you just have to wonder what’s going to happen with the quarterback position.”
Even against an injury-riddled Lions defense on Sunday, Murray struggled and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell appeared to lose confidence in Murray, turning the ball over to the Lions with three minutes left in the fourth quarter rather than trusting Murray to convert a fourth-and-5.
After that punt, the Lions ran out of time and Murray never touched the ball again. If Wentz starts Monday night and plays well against the Bills, it might be a long time before Murray touches the ball again.
