Resident Evil executive producer says series’ story could end ‘within the next 10 years’

In an interview with Yahoo Japan, executive producer Jun Takeuchi outlined Capcom’s plans for its flagship horror franchise, revealing that its encompassing narrative has a definitive conclusion – and that ending could come very soon.

Takeuchi began by explaining how the team developed Resident Evil’s overarching story with each game, saying that a ten-year strategy was developed during the planning stages of Resident Evil 2 Remake.

“The story of the series was not planned from the beginning; it expanded with each new game. When we were planning RE:2 and creating a 10-year brand concept, that was the most difficult aspect. If you play them all, I think you will understand the meaning behind the order of the remakes,” he said.

“With Requiem coming out this year, I feel like the first 10 years are over, so I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years.”

This is sad news for die-hard fans who were hoping to face hordes of zombies with Leon until the end of time, not to mention fans of all the other characters we’ve come to know and love over the years. And who’s to say if that means we won’t see these characters again in a new, different story?

As for how many Resident Evil games we can expect from Capcom in the meantime, Takeuchi assured us there would be several, although he didn’t describe any in depth.

“I can’t say because it would ruin everyone’s fun, but there won’t be just one. There will be multiple titles,” he said.

Resident Evil proved to be a huge success for Capcom, especially after RE7: Biohazard brought the series back to life. Resident Evil 2 Remake is the best-selling game in the franchise, and its most recent addition, Resident Evil Requiem, surpassed $500 million in revenue after its release earlier this year, becoming a driving factor in console sales in Japan.

On top of that, Resident Evil 2 Remake was one of Capcom’s ten best-selling titles in the first half of its 2027 fiscal year, with RE7 not far behind. Resident Evil 4 was also on this list, as were RE3 and Requiem, meaning that half of the company’s best sellers during this period were from the Resident Evil franchise.

There’s a lot to look forward to for Resi fans in the coming months; the Code Veronica remake launches early next year, and screenwriter Haris Orkin has essentially leaked story mode DLC for Requiem that’s supposed to involve Spencer in some way. There’s also Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie to consider, which received rave reviews and box office success – although Cregger is unlikely to make a sequel, even though he already has plans for what he would do next.
