An outraged diner calls a major restaurant chain after discovering a surprise “administrative fee” quietly added to his dinner bill.

Earls Kitchen and Bar, a popular “upscale casual” restaurant chain with more than 67 locations across the United States and Canada, is now under fire after an angry customer exposed its controversial billing policy on Reddit.

The restaurant said it was “extorted” after being charged an “administrative fee” for ordering a burger at a restaurant. Reddit

The furious customer posted a photo of his receipt online from a Denver location, where he stopped for a burger and truffle fries. But alongside the standard sales tax, the bill included a subtle 3% surcharge simply described as an “administrative fee.”

The itemized details on the check listed a deluxe burger for $24.75 and truffle fries for an additional $3.00.

Yet the final bill was $30.86 before a tip was even factored in.

“What are “administrative fees”? the customer spoke out online. “Can a guy even enjoy a hamburger without being harassed and extorted in this godforsaken place? That pissed me off… No tip for you!”

The post exploded with comments from other Reddit users furious about skyrocketing restaurant bills and hidden surcharges. Countless commenters have called this tactic a money grab, and some say they’re considering deducting all mandatory admin fees directly from the server’s tip.

“I’m going to charge the customer a fee next time I eat out,” one commenter scoffed.

“Looks like it’s the administrator who gives the tip. There you go, have your 3%, no more,” added another.

“At this point, restaurants might as well start taxing us like Uncle Sam!” » » declaimed a third user. “Count fees, staff happiness fees, gas fees – where does it stop?”

The Post reached out to representatives of Earls Kitchen and Bar for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.

Earlier this month, Los Angles restaurant Üca Terraza was called out for charging a 5 percent administrative surcharge, adding an additional $8.25 on top of a mandatory 20 percent tip added to the check. After ordering two beers, a water and three meals, the poster’s subtotal came to $173.25, including sneaky fees.

But with the mandatory tip and sales tax, the order cost the restaurant $226.36, drawing the customer’s rightful anger.

Earls’ receipt was shared on Reddit’s popular r/EndTipping community, a forum where weary diners gather to share their frustration with tipping fatigue and mandatory service charges, saying they feel social pressure and judgment for being anti-tipping.

The viral backlash reflects a broader national trend: A recent survey found that 78% of U.S. consumers believe modern tipping practices have gotten completely out of hand, while nearly three-quarters (74%) said they have seen default tipping prompts increase significantly on digital payment screens.

Faced with automated tip requests, 59% of respondents admit to feeling guilty about leaving a tip even when service is poor and are increasingly frustrated by both the size of expected tips and the increasing number of situations where they are asked to tip.
