Rich Rodriguez doesn’t hold back after loss to Iowa State
On the game as a whole: We were too undisciplined. Not well enough trained to give us a chance. The sanctions were atrocious. Some were justified. Some were pretty close. Pass interference over long distances. Some illegal procedures. You have to be better than that and you have to stop someone to win the game. We had several opportunities to do this and we didn’t succeed.
On the fumble to end it: I think DJ is just trying to make a play. You have to be careful turning and stuff like that, but he was just trying to make a play. I felt good. We were in midfield, we just needed a basket to equalize. That didn’t happen and give them credit.
On whether tackling or communication was the defense’s problem: Just poor. Two games in a row is atrocious defense. They ran hard and they found good players, but we… I don’t know. I thought we were solving some of these problems, but it certainly didn’t seem like it. WE must do a better job. 29 first downs, 577 yards, two game-winning drives. All we needed was one stop. It’s just a *long pause* ugh. It’s hard to watch.
On the two long passing game TDs for Iowa State: You must be joking. One of them was a coverage area where there was simply no reason. The other one, he just didn’t pay attention to his man. These are things I haven’t seen in years. I challenge everyone. I challenge the staff. I’m sure if you’re a Mountaineer fan, it’s hard to watch, because it’s hard for me to watch… We’re going to face guys (in the future) who are really, really good offenses. We must consolidate it.
On playing against a lot of guys on defense: Yeah, it looked like it. I’m just trying to find a way. Pfft….. sheez.
Final Thoughts: We need to play better football in all aspects, but we certainly had some key issues at a level I haven’t seen in a long time. We need to fix this quickly.
