Rick Jackson is the Georgia Republicans’ best hope. Donald Trump could get in the way.
Georgia Republicans are counting on Rick Jackson to save them from being erased in November – if the president Donald Trump don’t get in the way.
The healthcare billionaire and political newcomer has spent nearly $200 million since he entered the race for Georgia governor earlier this year. That boosted the Republican Party’s hopes, as many party members all but dropped out of the state Senate race, where Rep. Mike Collins is struggling to close the gap with a fantastically well-funded Democratic senator. Jon Ossoff. Republicans fear their open elections for attorney general and lieutenant governor as well as control of the state General Assembly could be threatened by a broader blue wave.
But Jackson’s Deep pockets are under strain in a tough political environment for Republicans, weighed down by unpopular policies. Asset actions, including the war in Iran. And some in the Republican Party fear that the president’s repeated visits to Georgia will only make the situation worse.
“I don’t know that Asset coming helps Republicans more than it excites Democrats, especially in a wave election year, and thus becomes a trap for Republican candidates,” said Jason Bergera former Cobb County chairman who supports Jackson.
