Robinhood rolls out agentic AI trading accounts to the general public
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) is rolling out AI agent-managed trading accounts for everyday customers with the goal of making self-trading a mainstream product for retail investors.
The company announced late Tuesday that it would begin offering new so-called agent accounts alongside other new products, including crypto-linked perpetual futures and profit-linked options, as well as weekend stock trading plans.
The product line is Robinhood’s latest initiative to offer retail investors increasingly sophisticated products “once reserved for hedge funds, big banks and quantitative firms,” CEO Vlad Tenev said in a press release ahead of the company’s active space-themed trading event in Houston, Texas.
Robinhood will begin offering the new accounts to customers randomly over the coming weeks, while attendees of the Houston event — where Tenev appeared in an outfit reminiscent of Star Trek’s Captain Kirk — received immediate access.
Robinhood first opened its trading platform to artificial intelligence in May by allowing customers to connect external AI agents to the online brokerage’s trading infrastructure. About 150,000 of its customers have since opened agent accounts, the company said.
This latest version attempts to reduce friction by moving the experience into the Robinhood app.
“We said, ‘Oh, if we made this 100 times easier and nicer, … you could probably go from 150,000 people using it to millions,'” Abhishek Fatehpuria, Robinhood’s vice president of product management, said in an interview.
Clients can instruct agents to monitor markets and execute trades, including through recurring strategies executed under predefined conditions.
Transaction-by-transaction approval is enabled by default, but clients have the option to disable approval, allowing an agent to negotiate autonomously. Agents can only use funds transferred to a separate agent account.
Robinhood will initially offer customers access to models created by Anthropic and OpenAI (OPAI.PVT).
The company will charge customers to use the model through its platform and said one OpenAI model, Luna, will be free for the remainder of 2026. The company declined to disclose whether it has any revenue-sharing agreements with AI providers.
Robinhood will begin rolling out the new accounts to customers on a random basis over the coming weeks, while attendees of the Houston event will receive immediate access.
Customers are responsible for their agents’ trades, Robinhood said, adding that it has not yet measured or compared the investment results of customers using agent accounts with those of other non-agent strategies.
