NEW YORK – Red Sox leadoff hitter Roman Anthony was thrown out in the sixth inning of Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees on Tuesday.
Andruw Monasterio hit Anthony with one out in the inning against Yankees starter Cam Schlittler.
The 22-year-old missed 101 games from May 5 to August 29 due to a torn ligament under his right ring finger.
He felt discomfort in the same hand Tuesday, prompting the Red Sox to pull him.
“He took a check-wing and then another swing and his hand landed on him,” manager Chad Tracy said after Boston’s 9-0 loss. “And it got uncomfortable, so we had to move there.”
When reporters asked Anthony after the game, Red Sox media relations officials said the DH had already left Yankee Stadium.
Tracy said Anthony had felt “a zinger” in his hand “off and on” since his return.
“Today, more serious and uncomfortable things happened,” Tracy said.
Tracy said it was unclear whether Anthony would play in Game 2 on Wednesday.
“He was obviously very uncomfortable. So we had to take him out. We’ll have to see what tomorrow brings,” Tracy said.
If the Red Sox were to remove Anthony from the AL Wild Card roster due to injury, then he would have to miss the ALDS if Boston makes it. Outfielder Braiden Ward is here with the team and is an option if the Red Sox need to replace Anthony. Ward’s activation would require a movement of 40 men.
Curtis Mead and Anthony Seigler are here but on the IL. If Mead is close, maybe the Red Sox are aggressive in activating him.
Tsung-Che Cheng and Romy Gonzalez are part of the Stay-Ready group in Fort Myers. Gonzalez is “hit” with a hyperextended elbow but there is still an option.
Anthony went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in two at-bats against Schlittler before getting out.
Boston activated him from the injured list on August 30. In 25 games to close the regular season, he hit .262 with a .321 on-base percentage, .476 slugging percentage and .797 OPS. He had four home runs, six doubles, two triples, 10 RBIs, 12 runs, nine walks and 33 strikeouts in 112 plate appearances. He posted a 29.5% strikeout percentage during the streak.
Overall this season, he hit .245 with a .339 on-base percentage, .396 slugging percentage and .735 OPS in 55 games (242 plate appearances).
Anthony struck out on a curveball to start the game. He struck out to end the third inning on a 99 mph four-seam fastball.
Boston was leading 2-0 when Anthony exited the game. Monasterio struck out on his hit at bat in the sixth inning.
