Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Reboot Gets Full Series Order From Hulu
It stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two new FBI agents not named Mulder and Scully.
Hulu has officially picked up Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot, after giving the green light to a pilot in February. Variety reports that Coogler wrote and directed the pilot, fresh from Sinnersand will remain executive producer for the remainder of the episodes.
We don’t know much about the plot here, although Coogler has made comments suggesting this is a sequel series and not a total reboot. He called it a “new chapter” and that the team “wanted to honor everything that allowed the original series to touch so many people while still finding our own way in this world.”
Both a reboot and a sequel series carry risks. X-Files ran for 11 seasons in total, with an absolutely bonkers mythology that no one in their right mind should remember. However, people tend to be unhappy with complete reboots of well-loved properties that have faded into most people’s living memory.
We know the series stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two FBI agents not named Mulder and Scully. Their characters have been described as “two highly decorated but very different FBI agents” who “form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-closed division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” It certainly looks like X-Files In my opinion.
Jennifer Yale is the showrunner, not Coogler. She has written for shows like Legion, See, Right hand and yesour friends and neighborsamong many others.
This pilot being picked up for a full series order was a no-brainer, despite Coogler’s name recognition and the X-Files IP. Hulu also greenlit a pilot for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series, directed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao. The platform ultimately abandoned this one, which is disappointing.
