In 2018, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas – two of the three youngest players on Furyk’s team – starred, winning three out of four points in four-ball and four-ball duos.
While 21-year-old Jackson Koivun impressed in his undefeated Presidents Cup debut in last month’s comeback victory over the Internationals in Chicago, Furyk says he’s excited to inject more youth into Team USA.
“I really like the guys who have played for us over the last few years,” the 56-year-old, who played in nine consecutive Ryder Cups between 1997 and 2014, told the BBC.
“We have some tough, gritty veterans who have been around the block, and I’m excited, we have a lot of great young talent who haven’t played in this cup yet and I would bet two or three of them will in Adare.”
At the press conference, Furyk said he would ask his team to “do more than any American team in the past” to seal an elusive away victory and vowed to address his team’s recent dismal record as a quartet.
The United States has earned just three points from a possible 16 in the alternate shot format over the last two Ryder Cups.
“I know these numbers very well. I’ve experienced them over the last four games,” Furyk said.
“It’s not an anomaly. There are some issues. We understand that. It’s not something I’m very happy with. I intend to make some changes.
“As captains we have to do a better job – not only putting people in good pairs in good positions, but I don’t think we’re preparing for these matches the right way.”
The 2027 Ryder Cup – the second held in Ireland after the K Club in 2006 – will take place from September 17 to 19.
