She was seen in the water around 7 a.m. near 70 Arts Circle Drive, officials said.

An unconscious woman was pulled from the lake by members of the Evanston Fire Department, who attempted to save her life, officials said. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Northwestern officials confirmed she was a student at the university and was not from the Evanston area.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified her as Saba Hani Alkaabi, a 19-year-old woman, who lived on campus.

“Lake Michigan can be dangerous. Hazard warnings and signs prohibiting swimming and fishing are posted along Northwestern University’s lakefront property,” an update from Evanston city officials reads in part. “Evanston Police urge people to follow posted warnings, check lake conditions before approaching the water, and follow instructions from city or university officials to stay off water and off walls and rocks.”

No further information about the death was available as authorities continue their investigation.
