Sean McVay apologizes for his appearance at Sunday night’s press conference
Sunday night’s Rams-Broncos game had an interesting postscript stemming from coach Sean McVay’s postgame press conference. It was shortmainly because it started and finished before most of the reporters covering the team could arrive in the media room.
On Monday, McVay opened his next day’s availability with an apology.
“I’m sorry I missed you yesterday,” McVay said, via a transcript provided by the team. “I was there for a few minutes and there was a misunderstanding about the timing. Once a question was asked, there was enough silence (for the press conference to end).
“It was never my intention to miss any of your questions. If there was a misunderstanding, it certainly wasn’t the case. I apologize for that, but (vice president of communications) Artis (Twyman) just made me aware of that. I understand my role and my responsibilities to be able to speak up, whether it’s after a win or if we’re not getting the results we want. I want to at least acknowledge that. I know a few of our reporters were fair – there was some confusion with timing, but I was there for a few minutes. There was a pause in all kinds of questions and obviously, (it was an) emotional game that’s what led to it, but if there was a misinterpretation, I apologize.
It’s good that McVay apologized. Still, it’s hard to imagine McVay making a 90-second appearance if the Rams had won the game.
We saw and heard a brutal and fiery McVay last December, after a tough, hard-fought game against the Seahawks. It’s intense. He is emotional.
Ultimately, he is human. And while, for the most part, he is able to control his emotions, he might have said something he didn’t mean if he had been given repeated opportunities to talk about some of the calls made Sunday night.
