Security leader David Robinson resigns from OpenAI
David Robinson, head of OpenAI’s security systems team, has resigned from the company.
An OpenAI spokesperson told Business Insider on Friday that Robinson left the company last week, marking another moment of upheaval in the company’s security ranks. Robinson had previously led the company’s political planning.
Robinson has worked on security transparency within the company, including helping develop and share system maps that provide information about its models.
He did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Robinson’s departure comes with a flurry of attention to OpenAI’s security practices and personnel. The company announced Thursday that it had “parted ways” with three researchers, saying they violated its policies on sharing sensitive information.
Following the high-profile Hugging Face security breach, OpenAI is grappling with a series of other security incidents in which its AI models have misbehaved.
Advances in model capabilities have led researchers and business leaders to call for a slowdown in AI development. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said Tuesday at the company’s developer conference that security and alignment need to stay ahead of the model’s capabilities.
Johannes Heidecke, the company’s head of security, also left the company earlier this year.
In early September, Robinson wrote on
Things at OpenAI “are indeed changing significantly from day to day, but I don’t know if we’re moving fast enough,” he wrote on X.
