A Republican senator from Kansas claims to have settled a long-standing debt with a bakery whose complaint against him went viral amid his re-election bid. Sen. Roger Marshall took to social media Sunday to say he apologized and double refunded Holly’s Sweet Treats’ $678.75 bill for cookies, cupcakes and brownies purchased for his 2020 election watchdog party, according to the Hill. Three days earlier, store owner Holly Thomas publicly flagged the six-year-old debt, saying she “made repeated attempts to collect payment” over the course of a year as her small business struggled amid the pandemic. “This experience is the reason Roger Marshall will never get my vote,” she wrote, according to the newspaper. Tutor.

Marshall said he had “absolutely no idea how this happened” while sharing a screenshot of a $1,300 payment to the bakery. Thomas later confirmed that payment had been received, writing: “Better late than never, right?” The episode comes after Marshall’s former obstetrics and gynecology practice filed aggressive debt collection lawsuits against hundreds of patients who were owed just $101, according to the New York Times“report. Patients were required to pay 18% annual interest, resulting in a garnishment on their wages and bank accounts. Critics on social media pointed out that with simple 18% annual interest for six years, Marshall would have owed Thomas more than $1,400, although he paid $1,300.
