Sensor Tower: GTA 6 pre-orders reach almost 8 million, 74% purchased on PlayStation 5
Grand Theft Auto 6 is two weeks away and the highly anticipated title has nearly eight million pre-orders, according to recent data.
Sensor Tower’s GTA 6 tracker reports 7.71 million pre-ordered units, generating an estimated gross revenue of $751 million.
The PlayStation 5 edition accounts for 74% of pre-orders, generating $559 million, while the Xbox Series X|S accounts for 26% and $192 million.
During the first week of pre-orders in July, Newzoo estimated that GTA 6 generated $260 million worldwide. The company is also forecasting a 17.5% increase in full game spending this year due to GTA 6.
Sensor Tower reported in August that 89% of GTA 6 pre-orders were for the $100 Ultimate Edition, compared to 11% for the $80 Standard Edition.
“If we used ‘normal’ pre-order trajectories, the current four million pre-orders would reach over 40 million at launch,” said Karl Kontus, SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower. GamesIndustry.biz at the time.
“Actual pre-orders could be around 25 million. For comparison, Cyberpunk 2077 announced eight million pre-orders before launch. 25 million pre-order units would mean around $2 billion in sales by the time the game actually launches – immediately paying for its development cost and likely the vast majority of marketing as well.”
Further analysis from Sensor Tower published last month found that pre-orders for GTA 6 were 148% higher than those for 2022’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at this stage of launch. This analysis did not cover boxed versions.
Analysts have already said GamesIndustry.biz they expect the game to sell between 30 and 25 million, or even more than 50 million units.
