ServiceNow beat revenue estimates and raised its AI target, but its stock still collapsed and the fallout hit Salesforce, Workday and Adobe hard. A detail buried in the guidance is spooking investors across the enterprise software sector.

Editor’s Note: This article has been corrected to clarify that ServiceNow’s fourth-quarter guidance of $4.245 billion to $4.255 billion refers to subscription revenue, not total revenue, and to accurately identify slowing contract revenue growth as a major concern for investors.

Rising revenues and a higher AI target weren’t enough to protect ServiceNow (NYSE: NOW | NOW Price Prediction), as its forecast of slower contracted revenue growth reads like a warning for enterprise software as a whole. ServiceNow stock is at $122, down 19% in morning trading.

ServiceNow Contracting Outlook Overshadows AI Momentum

ServiceNow reported its third-quarter 2026 results after the close on October 28, showing revenue of $4.11 billion versus the $4.09 billion expected by Wall Street analysts.

ServiceNow’s adjusted earnings came in at $1.00 per share, less than the $1.02 Wall Street analysts expected. The company linked the shortfall to acquisition-related costs.

ServiceNow forecasts fourth-quarter 2026 subscription revenue of between $4.245 billion and $4.255 billion, broadly in line with Wall Street expectations. The biggest concern was the slowing growth of ServiceNow’s current remaining performance obligations (cRPOs), the contractual revenue the company expects to recognize over the next 12 months. This is a key indicator of future sales for a subscription software company like ServiceNow.

For the fourth quarter, ServiceNow guided cRPO growth to 18.5%, up from 21% at constant currency in the third quarter. President and CFO Gina Mastantuono said some renewals closed early in the third quarter, which took them out of the fourth quarter. Mastantuono added that additional deployment support on large AI contracts is being temporarily reserved as professional services in lieu of subscription revenue, representing an approximately 50 basis point drag on subscription growth in the fourth quarter.

On the AI side, ServiceNow raised its annual AI contract value target for 2026 to $1.7 billion, up from $1.5 billion. Mastantuono noted that consumption of agentic AI in production is growing more than 13 times year over year, while ServiceNow raised its full-year free cash margin target to 36%. CEO Bill McDermott said: “The business has never been in better shape than it is now. »

What Software Selloff says about Salesforce, Workday and Adobe

ServiceNow stock is now down 21% year to date (YTD). Salesforce stock is down 13% year to date, while Workday stock is down 10% year to date. Both competitors are falling as investors apply ServiceNow’s contract slowdown to demand for enterprise software in general, since all three sell multi-year subscriptions to large enterprises.

THE iShares ETF for the broad technology software sector (NYSEARCA:IGV) is at $107, down 5%. THE SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA: SPY) is at $769, down 0.5%, showing sales are concentrated in software.

Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) stock is at $242, down 3%, the smallest decline of the group. This buffer comes even though Adobe stock is down 31% year to date, the worst of the four names. A stock that has already been sold off this hard may be less likely to fall, as much of the concern over software growth may already be reflected in Adobe’s valuation. The counterpoint is that a sharp decline can continue to feed on itself if the company’s results are disappointing.

Alongside its results, ServiceNow has expanded its OpenAI partnership. It also signed a five-year support agreement with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and launched a Control Tower Alliance whose founding members include Anthropic and OpenAI. These developments present ServiceNow as a governance layer for enterprise AI that spans IT, HR, and customer service workflows, while in comparison, Salesforce focuses on customer relationship management, Workday on HR and financial software, and Adobe on creative and marketing tools.

Can ServiceNow’s AI offerings translate into subscription growth in 2027?

The next test for ServiceNow is whether its AI deployment work will translate into subscription growth in 2027, as management expects. Mastantuono argued that cRPO “doesn’t necessarily capture the full dynamics of the business.” Bulls may cite the raised AI target and higher cash margin target as support. Bears counter that a slowdown in growth could eventually be reflected in reported revenue, while acquisition costs are already weighing on profits.

Salesforce and Workday face a similar question, as their upcoming quarterly reports could confirm or contradict the slowdown ServiceNow just reported. These reports deserve close attention as the debate over enterprise software demand unfolds.
