‘SNL’ Host Inde Navarrette Wins Halloween With Penis-Destroying Robot Sketch ‘The Inventor’s Wife’
After a fairly weak cold open that was crushed by Tom Hanks’ David S. Pumpkins, Donald Trump (who admitted he “might be gay”) and his MAGA minion Nicki Minaj, and a funny opening monologue where host India Navarrette punched Shane Gillis, the Halloween edition of “Saturday Night Live” aired a surprisingly funny sketch called “The Inventor.”
The sketch opens with Navarrette giving the eulogy for her deceased husband, an “eccentric” inventor who “spent his last days in his workshop building God knows what,” adding, “My husband loved his inventions and he… loved his wife.” »
When she returns home after the wake, she sees that her husband has left a gift for his widow in his workshop: a cute robot resembling Wall-E called PD 44. The two become best friends, although she can’t figure out what PD’s “goal” is.
We jump six years into the future and Navarrette’s lonely widow is finally ready to date. She matches a handsome man named Tom Oakland (played by Ben Marshall) on a dating app, and the two go out on a romantic date. They seem to click, and she takes him back to her apartment for a nightcap to meet PD – when, all of a sudden, PD transforms into a giant, menacing killer robot, rips off Tom’s penis and throws it into the moon.
“PD stands for Penis Destroyer?!” Navarrette’s widow exclaims, before the robot shoots Tom with a laser beam until it explodes, covering her in blood.
“He loved me… My husband loved me after all!” said the delighted woman.
The sketch was a great showcase of Navarrette’s timing and commitment, and one of the best “SNL” digital shorts in some time.
